A Successful Opening Day

A quick look at the playing field on PRLL's 2024 Opening Day contained many elements of past Opening Days on Anderson Field - clear, brisk weather; a good-sized gathering of PRLL players and parents; some local dignitaries; banners signifying past PRLL championships; awards for 2023 title-winning teams; and the American Legion Honor Guard. There was, however, one notable difference -- the ceremonies took place not on Anderson Field, as they have since 1965, but on Pearl River's Central Avenue Field.  The event was moved there this year out of concerns that the limited parking situation this year at Anderson would not accommodate the number of guests for the event.  PRLL's staff, including a hard-working grounds crew, pulled out all the stops.  They carted the banners and signs - even a couple of field signs (Bocket, McKiernan, etc.) from Anderson and hung them along the fences of Central Field, giving the event a familiar feel.   Kudos to the grounds crew, and to the young lady who sang the National Anthem, and thanks to the American Legion regulars who serve as Honor Guard each year. The Joan Bourke Award, honoring a long-serving PRLL volunteer, was presented to Mike Strehle, whose coaching and leadership has benefited hundreds of PRLL youth since the early 1980's.
