Memorial Day 2026

We remember, with gratitude, all the servicemen and servicewomen who lived and died for this country.  On Memorial Day, we honor all of them, and, in particular, those in our own families and communities who are no longer with us.

We are also grateful for those men and women who, although not in the military, served others with the same spirit of selflessness. Here in the Pearl River/Rockland community, one such example was William (Bill) Harris.   A well-known and respected fire chief and contractor, he had great respect for our country and its military, and, in the wake of the national tragedy of September 11, 2001, gave nine months of his life searching and excavating in unhealthy conditions at Ground Zero in Manhattan.  He has been gone for 18 years now, but he is not forgotten. For those who did not know him, the following three articles provide a few details of his life and the respect that his community had for him.
